Varieties

Originating from Piedmont, Italy, Nebbiolo is often heavy, tannic and alcoholic with hints of blackberry, cherry, licorice or earth. It is best paired with rich meats and stews.

Vespolina is a red Italian wine grape variety that is planted in Piedmont around the town of Gattinara. The grape is most likely indigenous to this area of Piedmont and has been identified as an offspring of Nebbiolo. Outside of Piedmont, it is found in the Lombardy region where the grape is known as Ughetta.

Uva Rara is a red wine grape variant from the southern parts of Lombardy in Italy's northwest. It is most commonly known as a variety employed in the Oltrepo Pavese DOC array of red wines. Uva Rara is known as Bonarda Novarese in Piedmont where its named after the town of Novara, the hub of winemaking in the region.

Region

Similar to Burgundy, Piedmont winegrowers believe that great wine is derived from an ideal site-specific grape variety, which for Burgundy is Pinot Noir and in Piedmont is Nebbiolo. Nebbiolo grapes from Piedmont make two massively tannic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, which both can and should be aged for years before consumption. The local wines of Piedmont also include wines made from the Barbera (rustic and fruity) and Dolcetto grapes (juicy and bitter). The region also is home to the dry white wines Gavi and Arneis, as well as the expensive and sweet Moscato' Asti and semi-sweet sparkling wine Asti.region map
