Region

California produces 90% of all the wine made in the United States. The original wine trade was founded by Franciscan missionaries who grew vines to produce wine for mass. Grapes are grown from Mendocino in the north all the way south to Temecula. There are six leading grape varietals in state including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Unlike many cooler climate wines of the Old World, California wines are drenched with sun allowing them to fully ripen. Where cooler European wines can be described as having precision and grip, California wines are generally plump, full and fruity. region map
