Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt. It was a crossing of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria, as well as having some presence in Canada's vineyards.

St. Laurent

country map

Large wine producing region in eastern Austria surrounding the Neusiedlersee Lake known for its red wine production, particularly from the Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt grapes. Sandwiched between the Alps in the west and the warm Pannonian Plain of Hungary on the east, the area is ideal for red wine production. The heat and sunshine carries into the autumn allowing for an extended growing season and prime conditions for botrytized dessert wines.
